"It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan." - Eleanor Roosevelt
(Editor's Note: I realized I posted Resolution 3 before 2. No rhyme or reason, I was just really enjoying reminiscing about the start of my career!)
At the end of the day or week, I try to take an extra 5 minutes to pull together my assignments for the next day/week. It helps me to hit the ground running. Organization is essential to being an effective and efficient Paralegal. Sometimes little changes help, whether it be rethinking how you file your emails or keep track of your projects. If you can afford it or your firm/employers allow it, think about adding some color to your work. I love to use color folders to represent different clients or types of work. Visual reminders can help identify work quickly and help you prioritize your assignments. The most important tip I can give is to find what works best for you, but make sure it is a system you can commit to and stick with for at least 6 months or more.
What are the ways you like to stay organized?

Resolution 3: Decorate your space
"Sacred spaces can be created in any environment." - Christy Turlington
My philosophy: you have to spend at least 8-10 hours at work a day, you might as well make it a place you'd want to be in for that long. I've been fortunate to work in my own office and have yet had to experience working in a cube or shared space.
I remember fondly my first office because it came with my first Paralegal job. I'm pretty certain it was a former broom closet converted into an office. But, hey, at least it was an office! I even had my name on the door on one of those nice name plates. The office had an air conditioner vent that ran constantly, only one florescent light, and a few mismatched pieces of office furniture, including a large desk. (I even had to share a printer with another Paralegal 2 doors down.) Regardless of the small size, I made the office my own. I proudly displayed my college diploma and Paralegal Certificate. I brought in a lamp, plant, pictures and cozy chair. The lamp was great to offset the harsh florescent lighting. Confession - if I needed to get a lot of work done, but did not want to close my door, I just put on the soft light of the lamp and crank out the work.
Nowadays, in my current position, I'm in an actual office with very unattractive metal furniture and a lot of florescent lights! My name is printed on a sheet of paper instead of the fancy name plate. This time instead of cozy, it's a bit more sterile with a lot of white. But, again, I've got my diploma, Paralegal Certificate, and State Bar Certification proudly displayed on the walls. I've got another plant and lots and lots of pictures of my family. The little personal touches really help to take away from the sterile feel and helps me be more productive.
If you are able to bring a little personality in your space, go for it. Please be cognizant of your work environment, as you still are a professional. Happy Decorating!
